Secrets of "Volvo Concept Truck"
Volvo Trucks is always seeking to improve its products by making them more environmental-friendly. After 5 years of research, the manufacturer has developed a new concept truck. This new vehicle will cut fuel consumption by 30 %. This project started in 2011 and its aim is to improve by 50 % the efficiency of trucks used over long distances. The tractor trailer has already been tested on Swedish roads in the last few months.
For the moment, this truck is just a concept and is not available yet. However, the manufacturer explains that some aerodynamic functions are already set up on the Volvo Trucks vehicle series.
The Swedish Energy Agency and the American Energy Department are working together on this project. Indeed they have both invested in the tractor-trailer researches.

A better aero dynamism to save energy
The Swedish manufacturer has optimized the trailer’s and tractor unit’s aero dynamism. They initially installed cameras instead of traditional rear-view mirrors in order to cut air resistance. Moreover, it allows the driver to have a better visibility. They also redesigned the wheels and front of the tractor unit to reduce air resistance.
These aerodynamic changes allow a cut in fuel consumption on long distance journey.
Technical improvements for environmental-friendliness

The new concept of the Volvo tractor-trailer is equipped with brand new tires generation. Moreover, the trailer has been lightened from 2 tons compared to the original one. It allows another decrease in fuel consumption or a rise of the working load. Finally, the drive chain also has been improved.
Volvo Trucks CEO, Claes Nilsson says: ''We do our best to develop vehicles always more environmental-friendly. It is essential to preserve the environment as well as to cut costs for our customers. We are proud to be at the forefront of this kind of developments. Our concept vehicle shows the power of huge technical advances.''
