Tomorrow is Now: Otto Autonomous Commercial Trucks
Autonomous trucks will be able to drive sooner than thought? This topic comes over and over in the media and driverless trucks may be sold before autonomous cars. Indeed, in San Francisco, the Otto startup, developed by four former Google engineers, has created a set for autonomous driving. One of the founders is none other than Anthony Leyandowski, the constructor of the first Google driverless car. Constructors such as Daimler and Volvo Trucks had already experimented construction of driver less trucks. The specificity of Otto is to make autonomous trucks by implementing autonomous diving set to existing trucks.
Otto was fully financed by its members. The company is already thinking about selling of autonomous driving systems.
Tested Driving Set
Otto already made some tests in Nevada – it has equipped three Volvo trucks (VNL 780) with a driving set. Software which will directly be integrated in the vehicle could allow the truck to drive on its own. This system has been conceived by Otto engineers in order to operate on long, regular and soft roads.
This driving set is actually software and equipment composed of cameras, radars and equipped with a LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging).
What motivates such a firm ?
Its founders wants to reduce highway crashes through the USA and to avoid truck drivers driving during the night. Indeed, what the company is looking for is to allow trucks to drive on their own while the driver rests in the cab.
The Otto startup is looking for volunteers conveyors through the USA in order to set up in some trucks the equipment able so that the truck becomes autonomous.
In many states, there is no specific law about autonomous trucks. This lack of legislation allows the startup to test their vehicles on several roads.
