A bus is a road vehicle from the heavy vehicle family for transport or public transport of travelers. The bus is an urban or periurban transportation mean, contrary to coaches that are used for longer distances. Buses travel on short distances, bus travelers don’t have to be seated or wear a seatbelt.
There are different types of buses : minibus (up to 30 passengers), midibus (between 70 and 80 passengers), the double-decker bus and articulated bus can transport up to 200 people. Currently, a standard bus can transport approximately 100 passengers. In order to make it easy to get on and off, buses have several doors and more often an easier access for people with reduced mobility.
Historically, the first bus was designed by Stanislas Baudry in Nantes, France in the 19th century and called “omnibus”. In 1831, Walter Hancock launches the first bus equipped with a steam engine then followed by the first bus with a fuel engine developed by Benz. Located in Paris in 1905, buses have gradually replaced tramways. This trend has recently changed with the use of new underground and tramway lines in large cities.
