Optifuel Lab 2, the energy laboratory from Renault Trucks

After the Mercedes self-driving truck, let's take a look at another tuck from the future, that produces its own electric energy. The Optifuel Lab 2 is a laboratory vehicle build like a Renault Trucks T. With the help of the ADEME and eight partners such as Michelin,Renault Trucks' goal is to research and test a way to reduce energetic consumption. The Optifuel Lab 2 has 20 technologies which addresses the main issues associated with consumption : energy management, aerodynamics, wheel resistance and driving aids.

Two new energy sources to produce electricity

The Optifuel Lab 2 is equipped with photovoltaic panels, specially designed for this project. The solar energy supplies the cab's air conditionning. The insulation has been optimised to limit the needs.

The heat from exhaust gases is also used as a new energy source thanks to a system of recovery and distribution.

« The idea is very simple: convert the heat of exhaust gases into electrical energythe calories in the exhaust gases are recovered via an exchanger, vaporising the working fluid and using this vapour to drive an electric generator. » explains Claude Covo, project manager.

The Optifuel Lab 2, an aerodynamic truck

The manufacturer improved the aerodynamics of the truck in order to produce the water drop effect. For instance, the roof is curved and the rearview mirrors have been replaced by cameras. The oil level is permanently adapted to the vehicle's needs. Finally, it is equipped with Michelin prototype tyres, optimised to reduce the consumption.

Helping systems to economic driving

The driver also plays its role in reducing the consumption. That's why the Optifuel Lab 2 has different systems that help drive economically. It is equipped with an adaptive speed limiter with a GPS, and an adaptive gas pedal. These systems help the driver anticipate its needs and adjust the driving with the truck's position.

The driving laboratory is being tested on roads to evaluate the possible consumption gains. The results will be given by the manufacturer in 2015. Until then, you can look at a model of this trucks at the Hanover IAA in the Renault Trucks booth.
