Scania tests hydrogen technology with Pilot Partner
To achieve sustainable transport, Scania relies on a strategy primarily focused on battery-electric trucks. However, the manufacturer is not closing the door on hydrogen.
Ongoing tests with Asko Norge AS
A few weeks ago, at the Transport.CH trade fair in Bern (Switzerland), Scania announced the launch of a new testing phase. Conducted in partnership with logistics specialist Asko Norge AS, this phase will analyse the behaviour of several trucks equipped with hydrogen fuel cells. These vehicles will be assigned to real-world missions to test their capabilities and demonstrate their operational potential.
Such vehicles are not yet available in the manufacturer’s range. Nevertheless, they regularly undergo extensive testing under various conditions. The earliest tests have already highlighted certain advantages of hydrogen fuel cells. This technology enables ranges of more than one thousand kilometres on a single refuelling. It is also compatible with environmental objectives, as only water vapour is emitted during operation.
Pilot Partner: experimenting to innovate
The goal of this project is twofold. First, it aims to acquire new knowledge, validate or invalidate recent developments, and guide future research. Second, it enables a loyal customer of the manufacturer—also strongly committed to sustainable transport—to test a new transport solution.
The collaboration with Asko Norge AS is part of a programme called Scania Pilot Partner. Launched in 2021, it coordinates the various tests, regardless of powertrain or vehicle type.
