Crash test: the eActros 600 withstands a one-ton mass launched at 50 km/h!
The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 has undergone a series of tests designed to assess its behavior in the event of a collision. The main goal: to ensure that the high-voltage battery modules of the electric truck do not sustain critical damage upon impact.
Testing the safety of electric trucks
The presence of an electric drivetrain requires specific protective measures to safeguard passengers and minimize environmental impact in the event of a severe crash. In this experiment, a scenario equivalent to a serious road accident was simulated, generated by a one-ton mass impacting the side of the truck at over 50 km/h.
Despite the force of the impact, all high-voltage battery components and other electrical parts remained intact. Thanks to insulating materials, they were mainly protected by the innovative chassis design. Other systems can also complement the safety setup, such as the reinforced cab and the energy-absorbing zones at the front. Airbags and seatbelt pretensioners also play a vital role in saving lives.
Post-production testing
While it may seem surprising that such significant tests are conducted on a model already on the market, this practice fits within the manufacturer’s philosophy of continuous improvement. Post-production tests are conducted regularly to validate the latest developments and speed up their deployment.
