Electric trucks: MAN tests night transport in the mountains
MAN Truck & Bus and German haulier Dettendorfer carried out a four-week real-world test this summer. The aim was to assess the performance of several electric trucks on a night route.
Replacing conventional trucks
The chosen route ran from Raubling (Germany) to Bolzano (Italy) via the Brenner Pass at 1,370 m. This pass is closed at night to diesel trucks to reduce environmental and noise pollution. With a special exemption, electric trucks are allowed to cross it without restrictions.
The vehicles used in this test are part of the MAN electric truck range produced in Munich (Germany) since this summer. They were designed to meet the needs of future customers and to overcome the limited charging infrastructure. All models guarantee a minimum range of at least 800 km with only one intermediate charge, even in winter with heavy battery use.
Improving logistics flows
Electric trucks will positively impact logistics operations in this mountainous region. Many industries, such as pharmaceuticals and food processing, require constant supply to maintain production.
The Brenner route will be less congested, reducing the risk of traffic jams in nearby cities. The local environment will also benefit: covering 110,000 km with an electric truck instead of a diesel avoids the emission of 95 tonnes of CO₂.
