A connected cap reduces fatigue signals when driving
Drowsiness while driving is the reason of 30% of fatal accidents every year on highway. With this disturbing reality in mind, Ford just introduced the prototype of connected cab they designed to help drivers when the first signs of drowsiness come.
A smart cap for truck drivers
Simple and common looking, this connected cap is a brand new technology in terms of driving safety. It is equipped with gyroscopes, accelerometer and a processor that follow and analyses the driver's head's movements. When the sensors detect any sign of sleepiness, it activates three signals : a slight vibration, a warning sound and a flashing light.
"The cap can detect the movements of the head even before the driver closes his eyes, for example when the muscles of his neck start to relax." , explains Dr Lia Bittencourt, of the Sleep Institute, who helped develop the accessory.
A promising project for driving safety
Named SafeCap, this accessory has been designed to commenorate the 60-year anniversary of truck production in Brazil by Ford. Sleep specialists as well as Brazilian creative agency GTB have taken part in the project that is supposed to reduce accidents involving truck drivers. Indeed, they spend long hours behind the wheel, these truck drivers are more prone to accidents caused by sleepiness.
This connected cap, absolute innovation in the driving safety world, is only a prototype at the moment : the Ford company hasn't communicated about the sale of this product yet. We can only hope to see it on the market by 2018.
