Volvo Trucks launches a new powertrain
Always seeking innovation, the Swedish maker is getting ready for the IAA trade in Hannover, which will take place in September (from the 22nd to the 29th). Volvo Trucks will attend the trade with its brand new truck powertrain. The firm showcases its new common rail 13-liter Euro-6 engine – the I-Shift – as well as its aerodynamic vehicles. With those improvements, Volvo Trucks wants to cut fuel consumption.
I-Shift available in 3 different versions
Firstly, Volvo Trucks offers a standard version of the I-Shift available in different versions according to the type of haulage. The maker also showcases the I-Shift Dual Clutch, a dual clutch transmission. Thus, the engine torque is maintained when the trucker changes the gears. The I-Shit Dual Clutch is designed for operations during which trucks are driven at high average speed. The third version has crawler gears. It has been designed for heavy transport. Thanks to these crawler gears, the vehicle can start with a 325-ton Gross Combination Mass. Moreover, the truck may be driven at very slow speed.
The common rail 13-L engine evolutions
Concerning the engine innovation, the common rail injection system is offered on every power levels. The compression ratio is increased for the 420-HP and 460-HP D13 engines. Volvo also offers an enhanced turbocharger for 500-HP and 540-HP engines.
Enhanced aerodynamics
A while ago, Planet-Trucks.com has mentioned that Volvo Trucks optimized its vehicles aerodynamics. Indeed, the front bumper spoiler is now adapted to an optimum air distribution below and around the vehicle. To improve the air flow between the tractor unit and the trailer, the air deflector panels as well as the wheel wells have been enhanced. Finally, the mud guards and mud flaps still have their initial function and have been designed to reduce air drag.
Thanks to these improvements, Volvo Trucks wants to cut its trucks fuel consumption. Obviously, these savings depend on the vehicle and its operations. For instance, a Volvo FH used for long haul operations, the fuel savings reach 3%.
