Vario, a real standard in the commercial vehicle industry
This range of commercial vans was manufactured in 1986 and was a huge hit in the nineties. A total of 90 742 Varios have been produced at the Ludwigsfelde factory, which was the sole producer.
“The length of the production demonstrates the huge success that this vehicle had met” confirms V.Mornhinweg, at the head of the commercial van division for Mercedes-Benz.
Limits of the Mercedes-Benz Vario
Facing the economic crisis and the new UE regulations, the Vario should have required some big investments to comply with the Euro 6 standard. However, the large amount of investment necessary could not be done, as the Vario would not be profitable anymore.
Vario, a happy ending
The last Vario commercial van was sold the 24th September 2013 to a company in Ludwigsfelde, as a tribute to its hometown.
Besides, a “tractor unit” version of the Vario is now displayed at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart.
