Past and present meet at the refurbished Volvo museum 14/08/2008
The Volvo Museum in Gothenburg, which is run jointly by AB Volvo and
Volvo Car Corporation, recently re-opened after being extensively
refurbished and extended since its original opening 13 years ago.
Visitors are now welcomed by a new façade made entirely of glass, but
once inside they are struck by the contrast between the old and the
new. The latest acquisition - a gigantic Volvo VN780 built in Virginia,
USA, - stands side-by-side with the very first Volvo truck, the LV40,
which rolled out of the plant in 1928.
Last year, the museum attracted almost 52,000 visitors, around 60 per
cent of whom came from outside Sweden. As this museum can only be
described as a jewel in Volvo's crown, we are now hoping to welcome
many more visitors, says Sten-Åke Lyngstam, the museum curator for the
past year.
Following its refurbishment, the museum now has a cafeteria, gift shop
and even the opportunity to hold a conference in one of the newly
equipped lecture rooms.

Are hydrogen vans the future? 21/07/2008
Hydrogen-powered trucks and vans could soon become a reality, thanks to
a British technology company. ITM Power, based near Saffron Walden,
Essex, has unveiled a converted Ford Focus, which runs on hydrogen, but
can switch back to petrol if the hydrogen supply is exhausted. The firm has also developed a home refuelling station, capable of
producing the gas from water and electricity. ITM's demonstration
vehicle, which has completed successful urban commuting trials, can
travel 25 miles An ITM spokesman says: "Although the initial demonstration vehicle is a
car, vans and trucks will also be able to use the new fuel system to
give CV operators huge potential cost savings on delivery journeys, as
well as further reducing CO2 emissions

New truck sales still healthy 21/07/2008
Continued strong demand is keeping trucks in the spotlight, according
to the latest registration figures from the Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Registrations for trucks were up
21.6% in June compared with 2007, and up 22.9% to 58,288 for the
rolling year. This contrasted to a 5.7% fall in monthly van sales
compared with last year, although sales for the rolling year remain up
2.5% at 337,294. Two-axle artics were the biggest monthly winners, up 98.3% on June 2007,although the rolling year increase was 14.8%. Sales of three-axle
artics increased 32.3% in June over last year, and are up 28.3% for the
rolling year. Overall registrations were down 2.3% in June, but up 5.1%
on the rolling year to 395,582. "Healthy truck orders suggest steady demand for some time, while van
registrations have stabilised at record levels," says SMMT chief
executive Paul Everitt. The biggest loser in the van segment was
pickups. Sales in June fell 48.3% on the same month last year.

DAF TRUCKS reveal from their records... 07/07/2008
DAF TRUCKS reveal from their records that in 1977, a typical maximum
capacity truck, running at 32 tonnes gross, carrying a payload of 20.5
tonnes on a 320km journey used 130 litres of diesel and put out 16.7kg
of CO2 per tonne of payload. Including a statutory 45 minute break, the
journey took six hours and ten minutes. In 2007, a maximum capacity truck running at 44 tonnes gross, carrying
a payload of 29.5 tonnes on the same journey used 103 litres of diesel
and emitted 9.2kg of CO2 per tonne of payload. Including the same
statutory break, the journey took four hours and 15 minutes. In summary, the 2007 truck used 21% less diesel, carried 30% more
payload, emitted 21% less CO2, meaning a CO2/t/km saving of 45%. The
truck emitted 96% less particulates and 87% less NOX. It was also 33%
quicker although working within a lower maximum speed limit. The modern truck also produced 1/12th of the noise of the older model.

VISTA attracts record numbers of participants 07/07/2008
The starter’s gun has gone off for the world’s largest competition for
service and workshop personnel and the organiser Volvo Trucks hopes for
record participation as last time the biennial competition attracted
more than 12,000 participants from about 70 countries. VISTA is a team competition for all aftermarket personnel within Volvo
Trucks’ global service network. Mechanics, technicians, parts
personnel, customer receptionists and all other employees within the
Volvo Trucks and Volvo Bus aftermarket organisations are welcome to
take part. The aim of the competition is to develop the expertise of in-house
personnel and to enhance the status of the mechanic’s and service
technician’s professions. The teams compete in practical and theoretical tasks, where both
technical know-how about trucks and buses as well as commercial
know-how about warranty and parts issues are in focus. Co-operation and
teamwork in all the competition’s rounds are necessary in order to
succeed.

Truck drivers protest fuel costs in London 03/07/2008
Truck drivers calling for a rebate on fuel taxes converged on London Wednesday for escorted, "go-slow" trips through the city, observers said.
Truck drivers gathered on a closed section of road, while police
escorted groups of 20 at a time on protest drives through central
London using a route that included crossing Westminster Bridge, The
Times of London reported. "The government have got to cut the fuel duty. All this is down
to (Prime Minister) Gordon Brown, and he is pulling (Chancellor of the
Exchequer) Alistair Darling's strings," truck driver Robin Edmunds told The Times. After a series of slow-go protests, the action Wednesday is the
first that was supported by the Road Haulage Association, the
Transportation Association and TransAction 2007, the Times reported. "If ever there was positive proof that ours is an industry in crisis then this surely must be it," said RHA National Chairman Andy Boyle.

Volvo Trucks and Securitas protect goods transport against attack 12/06/2008
Attacks against truck drivers and their cargoes in the EU cost haulage
firms several billion Euros every year. To help combat this risk, Volvo
Trucks and Securitas are now jointly launching a new security system
aimed at lowering the risk of theft, hijacking and other security
threats. Truck drivers and the goods they transport live dangerously on Europe's
roads. This is shown in several recent surveys. Every year
approximately 200,000 commercial vehicles are stolen, at a value of
more than 7 billion (£5.6bn), as revealed in a survey carried out in
2007 on behalf of the European Parliament. At the same time, a survey
by the International Road Transport Union (IRU) reveals that one in six
truck drivers have been subjected to some form of attack in the past
five years, with one-third having been attacked more than once. In 60
percent of the attacks, the main motive was the vehicle and its cargo,
while 40 percent were directed at the drivers and their personal
belongings. In addition, just over 40 percent of attacks took place at
special parking places intended for trucks. Now, in order to make the working day safer for commercial vehicle
drivers and to protect their cargo from theft, Volvo Trucks and
Securitas have launched a joint security venture called Security
Service' which is based on Dynafleet' - Volvo's existing transport
information system. Volvo Trucks is behind the development of the
technology, while Securitas is responsible for actual operation of the
system. This new security product will be available in production from June
this year. It is very simple to activate; in the event of an emergency,
the driver simply activates an alarm button inside his cab. A signal
then goes to the Securitas call centre, which in turn contacts the
haulage firm or the local police. The driver can also directly contact
the call centre via his mobile phone.

Volvo takes CO2-neutral truck good news from Gent to USA 06/03/2008
After the Volvo Group’s notable showcasing of carbon dioxide-neutral trucks in Gent, Brussels and Stockholm last year, it is now America’s turn.
In conjunction with the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference (WIREC) arranged by the US State Department in Washington, DC the Volvo Group will later today present seven different trucks, all of which can be driven without any net contribution of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.
During the conference, being held from March 4th–6th 2008, the Volvo Group will display seven different trucks - four Volvo FM’s, two Volvo VN’s and a Mack Pinnacle - which are equipped with engines specifically modified to operate with seven different renewable fuels or fuel combinations. At combustion in the vehicle, these fuels do not yield any net contribution of carbon dioxide to the eco-cycle and, consequently, do not affect the climate. In addition to the seven trucks, Mack will also display a hybrid electric vehicle.
The aim of WIREC is to highlight the global possibilities and challenges in the area of renewable energy. WIREC 2008 is the third global ministerial-level conference on renewable energy, following events in Beijing in 2005 and Bonn in 2004. Visitors at WIREC include government representatives from over 80 countries, politicians and interested parties from business and academia.
“The climate issue is global and one for which the transportation industry has a special responsibility,” says Volvo CEO Leif Johansson. “By participating in WIREC, we gain the opportunity to show the American public that the Volvo Group is not just part of the problem, it is also a part of the solution.”
In conjunction with the conference, the Volvo Group is arranging a seminar at which Volvo CEO Leif Johansson, Mack Trucks President Paul Vikner, Swedish Minister of Industry, Employment and Communications Maud Olofsson and Andy Karsner, U.S. Department of Energy’s Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy will participate.
